The main function of solar regulators is to protect the accumulators against overcharging, other built-in functions can be: floatation (keeping the accumulators charged at a high medium voltage) consumer control (disconnection of consumers when the batteries are empty).
There are different technologies, functions and sizes of the regulators. In case of using special accumulators (Gel, AGM, Lithium, NiCd, etc.), it must be ensured that the regulator is suitable for said type of batteries.
Integral control systems also have other functions such as automatic connection of auxiliary load (inverters or consumers), when the system enters a high load level.
With these functions it is possible to take advantage of surplus energy, when the batteries are full, the normal regulators disconnect the panels and the surplus energy is not used.
There are different technologies:
- PWM Pulse Width Modulated Pulse Width Modulation
- MPPT Maximum Power Point Tracking Maximum Power Point Tracking
